Van / Minivans is a kind of vehicle designed and engineered for personal use and are usually either two-box or one box designs for maximum interior volume. All over the world, these vehicles are sold as multi purpose cars, multi utility vehicles, people carriers or people movers. In India and Europe, multi purpose vehicle defines the general vehicle kind without reference to the size. They are also described as mini MPV, supermini, compact MPV, small family car, large MPV, large family car, multi utility vehicle, people carrier and people mover. These vehicles are typically between 1600 to 1800 mm tall, which is approximately 200mm taller as compared to station wagon, sedan and hatchback.

Van cars come with seats either individual or bench seats, which are designed to be folded partially, detached and removed completely under floor for enhanced cargo room and variable seating capacity. Vans / minivans are classified in three or four categories, which include large, micro, compact and mini. Models of all these categories are present in parts of Asia, Europe and Americas. The vehicles with rear mounted engine were Ford Econoline, Subaru Sambar, Chevrolet Van, Toyota Hiace and Suzuki Carry. General Motors launched the Chevrolet Lumina APV, Pontiac Trans Port and Oldsmobile Silhouette in the year 1990.
